GEAR PRO UNIX How To Guides are available here
Many Solaris 10 users wish to use the secure features inherent in Trusted Extensions in order to comply with mandates such as HSPD12, HIPAA and Sarbanes-Oxley. Others simply desire to optimize their overall security environment with Solaris 10 using Trusted Extensions.
In the event that burning data to a CD or DVD is necessary, GEAR PRO for Solaris 10 with Trusted Extensions (v 2.0) is the only optical burning product designed to operate within the secure Compartmentalized Mode Workstation (CMW) environment that Solaris with Trusted Extensions provides.
GEAR PRO stores files and directories with their original attributes, including CMW labels, and reliably burns them to DVD or CD. When GEAR's TSTrack option is used the software will only restore files and directories back to hard disk locations with matching CMW labels. This unique GEAR PRO feature eliminates the possibility of security breaches due to users archiving files under one label and restoring them under another.
GEAR PRO utilizes Solaris authorizations, providing administrators the ability to designate which users and roles can operate the software. GEAR PRO is also privilege aware. It will only run with the privileges allocated to the invoking user or role by the system administrator. The software can be assigned privileges and authorizations via Solaris Rights Profiles, allowing the system administrator to tailor GEAR PRO's abilities on a user-by-user and group-by-group basis.
GEAR PRO was coded using a technique called privilege bracketing, a technique that drastically improves the security of privilege aware programs. GEAR PRO provides both a tar-like command line interface, and a graphical user interface. Access to these interfaces is controlled independently via Solaris authorizations.
GEAR PRO is a secure, configurable, and user friendly archive-to-DVD/CD solution designed specifically for Solaris 10 with Trusted Extensions.
